Silvermist young adult drug and alcohol rehab

The start of a new year gives everyone the opportunity to make concrete, healthy changes in their lives. While many of us may start making a list of resolutions this time of year, for those in recovery from substance abuse, there are a few extra goals that are worth aiming for in the new year.

New Year’s Resolutions for Those Recovering from Substance Abuse

Improve Your Diet

A lot of people add this resolution to their list, but this goal is much more important for those recovering from addiction. After a prolonged period of time being affected by drugs or alcohol, your body needs the proper nutrients to heal and rebuild. Aim to fill your diet with plenty of vitamin and nutrient-rich foods.

Stay Positive

Of course, this is easier said than done — especially on the harder days of recovery — but try your best to remain positive and think about all you’ve accomplished on your journey. Even on days when you feel like giving in to temptation or doubt your strength, remember your goals, how far you’ve come, and how better life will be without substances.

Take Responsibility for Your Actions

When you were using drugs or alcohol, you may have tried to justify certain behaviors or choices by blaming the substances or those around you. This new year, hold yourself accountable for the choices you make. If it’s a poor one, that’s ok — own it and work to resolve it or try to be better moving forward.

Start to Journal

You’d be amazed at how freeing it is to write down how you’re feeling. Each day, try to write at least a few lines on how you feel at the start of the day, what you accomplished at the end of the day, etc. No matter how small victories may seem, writing them down helps you express them and provides you with a literal catalog of your successes.
