Each year since 1989, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has set aside September as a month to celebrate recovery and promote the message that recovery is possible, and it’s a wonderful place to be.1 There’s a lot going on in Pennsylvania for National Recovery Month. If you or a loved one is in recovery, head to one of these events and help spread the word that life is better on the other side.

Recovery Celebration in Meadville

Kick off National Recovery Month with a family-friendly celebration at Diamond Park.2 Join others in recovery and their supportive friends and family members to encourage and inspire one another. Food and fun—and information and resources—can be found around the park, and a ceremony featuring multiple speakers will begin at noon.

Love of Recovery Music Festival in Wilkes-Barre

Love of Recovery is an annual music festival featuring live music with short presentations from professional speakers between bands.3 This year, the bands include Muddy Shews, The Mike Miz Band and The Stickies. Find food vendors, arts and crafts exhibits and recovery resource information and merchandise throughout the park.

The RASE Project’s 6th Annual Comedy Show in Harrisburg

The RASE Project is a local advocacy group that provides a voice, resources and services for recovering individuals in the community.4 The RASE Project’s annual comedy show is a celebration of life and recovery. The evening starts out with dinner, followed by dancing and a comedy show that features two comedians and a guest speaker.

The Pittsburgh Recovery Walk in Pittsburgh

Celebrate National Recovery Month with a walk down Penn Avenue to celebrate the many roads to recovery.5 This high-visibility event aims to dispel the stigma of addiction and show that recovery is a positive force for communities. Everyone is welcome to join the walk. You can sign up at pghrecoverywalk.org.

  • Where: The parking lot at 11th and Waterfront in the Strip District, Pittsburgh

PRO-ACT Recovery Walk at Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia

Join people in recovery and those who support them for a walk through historic downtown Philadelphia.6 This walk raises awareness about recovery and its value to families and to the community. It also celebrates recovery and strives to end the stigma surrounding addiction. After the walk, which ends at the Great Plaza, browse the sponsor information booths and enjoy speakers and live music.

  • When: September 23, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Where: Penn’s Landing, 101 Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia

20th Annual Berks County Recovery Walk & Soberstock in Reading

The Berks County Recovery Walk offers a chance for people in long-term recovery from addiction to spread the message that recovery is possible, and there’s joy and authentic happiness to be found in a life of recovery.7 After the walk, Soberstock will keep you entertained with free live music and speakers, along with educational and informational booths and activities for everyone.

  • Where: City Park Bandshell, 1044 Washington St., Reading
