Learn How Much Alcohol Your Drink Contains

It’s a common misconception that one “drink” is equal to one of what beverage you chose. On the contrary, one alcoholic drink is that which contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. This amount is found in:

  • 12 ounces of regular beer, around 5% alcohol

  • 5 ounces of wine, around 12% alcohol

  • 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits, around 40%

Once you understand the amount of alcohol in each beverage, you need to account for drinks that are “larger” than the average. A “double” mixed drink, an IPA beer, or certain red wines can all have a higher alcohol content and cause you to technically drink more over a shorter period of time.

Keep Glasses or Tabs Near You

Oftentimes, you’ll toss a beer cap in the trash or return empty glasses to the bar — but hanging onto them can help you limit the number of drinks you have. By physically seeing how many drinks you’ve consumed, you can properly pace yourself and keep your BAC at an appropriate level.

Time Yourself

The safest way to consume alcohol is to keep it to one drink per hour, the amount of time it takes your body to process it. If you’re out drinking, try to stick to that rule or have your drink followed by a glass or two of water for the remainder of the hour.
