As social creatures, human beings don’t like to be left alone for too long. Unfortunately, recent events may have left you or someone you care about going through recovery alone, unable to see your loved ones as much as you would like.

Since isolation can be a main cause of addiction, as well as put those in recovery at risk of relapse when they feel alone, it’s important to learn ways to cope and maintain your sobriety.

Battling Isolation When in Recovery

Take Advantage of Technology

In today’s digital age, you are never more than a phone call or click away from speaking to someone you care about. If you find that you’re feeling more alone than you would like, pick up the phone and call someone in your support system to chat.

For more face-to-face contact, video chat with a loved one or arrange for a small get-together of friends via your computer. While you may not be able to see them in person, you can easily connect with friends and family with the help of an internet connection.

Get Outside

Just because you can’t be in close contact with people, it doesn’t mean that you have to stay inside your house. Take a walk around your neighborhood, go for a run in the park, or embark on a hike on a nearby trail.

Staying active, especially outside, can help increase your endorphins and reduce feelings of loneliness and stress.

Take Up a New Hobby

Especially with the increased amount of free time you may have now that you don’t have to commute to work, now is as good a time as any to try a new hobby that you may not have had time for in the past.

From baking or yoga to painting or learning a new language, you have plenty of options to stimulate your mind and fill your day with excitement.
